I have a corded Wahl clipper. I buzz my head when I feel like my hair is too long. I never shave to the scalp to try and get a few days of that clean-shaven look. It's not worth it, and it's not worth maintaining. I haven't paid for a haircut in over 20 years. I do the same thing with my beard, though with that I rarely shave as close as my head. It's more of a "reduce it to a sufficient length" thing. But I will trim closer around my neck and upper lip. But after doing either of those things, I just let it grow. Shaving smooth is a suckers game.

I have a buzzcut and I use a $20 Wahl clipper to do it myself. I'd say it was worth the cost considering it paid for itself after just one use. Would rather pay the $20 once than have to go pay someone $20 every 6 weeks or so to do it for me.

Balder Pro is a godsend. I shaved my head for shits & grins in 1999 but got tired of razors & shaving cream. The electric is awesome and makes the permanent baldness sooooo much easier. I shave 2x per week now and spend less time than one shave with a razor.

Ive used the Remington referenced here for over a year. If you wait longer than a week just hit it with no guard first. The Remington doesnt like long stuff and it can get tangled in there and its difficult to get it out.

I just started a few days ago. I’m using s Henson AL13 - Mild w/ Astra Greens. Imo Henson is a well throughout product and it is shaped to the point where it is nearly impossible to cut yourself. Just be gentle and let the blade do the work. Also, make sure to use good pre-shave, shave soap and after-shave. I posted what I’m using during my first attempt if you’re curious.

I tried shaving with a DE on my head but the learning curve wasn't there and i did cut myself quite some times. What I was looking for is a cheap, close, comfortable and fast shave for my head. So after trying the single blade I swapped to the LEAF razor and didn't look back ever. It ticks all the boxes for me: no need to worry about the angle of the razor when shaving, shaving is super fast and easy, no loose parts on the razor (as with the shavent i think), blades are super cheap (just don't use the leaf blades - buy different ones like Astra or something), no irritations. Also you can put as many blades as you want 1,2 or 3 and in different positions as well. Super easy to adjust to your needs. So for me it was the best purchase in a long time. Can't recommend it enough for headshaving. I must confess that I use just canned shaving gel that foams with a good amount of water for my shaves. It's the most convenient for me as thick lather does clog the razor easily and I am too lazy anyways for shaving soap. Also I tried an electric razor on my head before trying the single blade but I got bad burn on my head from going over the same areas over and over again to get a good shave. So that wasn't for me. If you have questions about the leaf razor feel free to ask!

2nd this. Super close shave when I'm lazy. Pricy but worth it. Check out costco if you have one near you. Goes on sale every once in awhile. If I want a smooth shave I use Leaf 3 blade razor with Astra blades, but only use 2 slots. The 3 were too rough for my head. I use cremo shave cream but not really picky with the shave cream.

I like the $60 Remington one on Amazon or Walmart. I’m sure a more expensive version of the same thing would get me a closer shave, but I use it every other day and rock the kinda Jason Statham look and I’m satisfied with my results. My hair grows so fast if I wanted to have the shiny bald head I’d have to shave my head like twice a day so I just go for a bare bare minimum amount of scruff and that shaver does the trick. Cheap, waterproof, rechargeable.

The Remingtons are garbage, stay away. For the same price get the freebird flex series pro. It's been my go to for a few months now for dry shaving. I just got the Remington Shortcut Pro. It’s super convenient. Coming from the Classic76 with #0000 blade. It doesn’t cut nearly as close but since it’s small and portable, my justification is that I would use it more frequently. I think the reason I liked the #0000 is because it bought me a few days time. Now if they made a #00 or #000 for the Shortcut Pro, I’d be happy. That 2.5” curved blade really cuts down on time and scratches. I learned new terms: rotary blade vs foil. Based on another comment I might try that Arc 5 for $160 but curious how it cuts hair that’s like 1cm? With the Classic76 I got real lazy and would go weeks before a trim.

1. Keep those handles and a few carts. The trimmer blade on top comes in really handy! 2. Don't worry about dealing with half blades. It's fine, really. Worst case, pre-cut half blades aren't that much more expensive. 3. Given that you don't want a lift-and-cut multiblade cart, and you understandably don't want to drop the money for a Leaf sight unseen, here's another headshaving option: the Gillette Guard. It's a *very* inexpensive single-blade cartridge razor with a pivoting head made in India specifically for the Indian market. I won't regurgitate the contents of a bunch of articles and threads from this subreddit here, but it's a fascinating history. Given that you called it a WS Hydro rather than Schick, I'm going to guess you're in the UK. My first assumption was that the Guard is easier, cheaper, and quicker to acquire in the UK than in the US, and it appears that that's basically true. You can get a handle + 19 carts for £7 here, for example: There are Guard headshaving videos out there. The only one I've seen myself is British, in fact. I can't vouch for the Guard as a headshaver myself, because my order is on the slow boat right now, but I trust the reviews.

I alternate between the Leaf 3 blade razor and a Panasonic Arc 5 electric. TBH, lately I’ve been using the Panasonic almost exclusively daily because it’s just plain easier, faster, and gets good enough results. I shave my head dry with the Panasonic (against the grain) and get BBS. If I really want to supercharge the shave I’ll oil the blades daily. The biggest difference in the results between the Leaf and the Panasonic are that I can feel stubble coming back a few hours sooner with the Panasonic than with a razor and shaving cream. I shave in about 2 minutes flat with the Panasonic and don’t even bother to use any aftershave. Less time, less money spent on products, close enough results.

I used the Remington RX5 for around a year total and, while it served its purpose well, it never quite cut as close as I’d like. Just upgraded to the Panasonic Arc 5 after much deliberation and it is one of the best investments I’ve made. Cuts practically as close as a wet shave and is light and easy to use. I will always choose foil over rotary now

Not many options for injector blade razors, but Parker Adjustable Injector, Supply SE, Supply Max are the few options off the top of my head. Another option is to go for AC (Artist Club) Razors. You can get a Yaqi Excalibur off AliExpress for a mere US$10-US$15, and search for Feather/Kai/Schick AC Blades to go with it. AC and Injector blades are thicker and stiffer than DE blades. For my own use (daily head shaving), they last 4X longer on average than what I get out of DE blades.

If you're shaped like me, there are some concave spots where you simply cannot reach with a straight edged blade. It can't be done. It's gonna look nice, but it'll never be BBS perfection, that's just how it is. If you know where that is, you'll stop trying, or you'll just end up with bad razor burn eventually. If it's not like that, then keep practicing. Some spots are very hard to get with the right angle, depending on your shoulder mobility. That said, I agree on the 37c, it's gonna cut closer and more efficient. I just got the 39C, which is the same head on a bigger and heavier handle. 37C has the same handle as 34C, it'll feel more familiar. I've gotten a way closer shave with the 39C than with the Mühle R89, which is comparable to a 34C. Fewer strokes to take off a lot of hair. Or maybe a Rockwell 6C or Merkur Progress, if you wanna go adjustable. They're both beloved and popular for a reason.

Hi, I've got the Kampfe A85 and Henson AL13+. After shaving for quite a while with the Kampfe A85, I believe the blade exposure is geared towards the AL13+++. There's another owner of the Kampfe A68 who also mentioned somewhat the same in terms of slightly more pronounced blade feel as compared to his AL13+ mild. So I reckon that the A68 should equate to a AL13++ (medium) and my A85's exposure is towards AL13+++ (aggressive). However, they are still considered mild imo compared to say, a Muhle Rocca. I'm happy with the A85, there's no blade chatter so the shave is pretty efficient. However, the 'suction' effect is present for long strokes, just like with the Henson, so that's a thing to take note of. It works well with Astra SP Blades which I initially thought it didn't (later found out that Astra SP blade was a rare dud which dragged and tugged in a Merkur 34C as well). Still, I take very gentle strokes to clear areas with razor bumps on my scalp (can't be too careful), so far no instances where the blade cuts through bumps. I have a Rockwell 6C, but it's just too head heavy and clumsy for head shaves, doesn't work well detailing around the ears, I'm sure u know what I mean. However, I recommend to try dropping down to plate 3 with the Astras, or plate 2 with feathers or nacets. It'll help to glide over those small little bumps without cutting them up, and it's quite safe to apply a bit of pressure for 2nd pass or buffing. All in all, the Kampfe is a very well made clone that is 95% similar to the Henson. I'm waiting for the next AliEx sale to grab their stainless steel lce-sword (Syntesi clone).

Remember that the cartridge tend to pull the hairs and cut below the surface level, single blades cut at the surface. That's why you feel that your hair is "growing faster" When I began shaving my head, I was never satisfied with the cartridge razors for head shaves. And the more blades, it had, the worst. You see? I have a fold in the back of my head. And the blades of a multi bladed cartridge never got deep enough to cut the hairs there. Only a single blade could do the job. I first used a shavette, but since I switched to DE. I no longer had that issue. Razor recommendations ( Based on the ones I have personally used) Gillette Tech, Super Speed flair or Red tip. Adjustable slim and Super Adjustables. KCG. Schick Krona Parker Closed combs Yaqi Mellon (Double Open Comb), The Final Cut. Vintage Gem 1912 or Jr. They could be intimidating, but, if you take things slow and practice, You can get good shave with them. The issue is that the blades are not as universally available as DE For lubrication, there are plenty of soaps and cream options but, even a cheap hair conditioner could do the job.

I've recently moved from Gillette SkinGuard to Henson AL13 (mild/+) for shaving my head/cheeks/neck. I'm currently liking Astro Superior Platinum (greens) over the RK Stainless that came with the razor, but I'm waiting for other samples to arrive. I have sensitive skin with coarse hair and try to keep a light touch, single pass, with the grain when I shave every day. I’ve just switched to a DE razor for head shaving a few weeks back, picked up the Rockwell 6S as I wasn’t sure if needed a mild or aggressive razor so being able to adjust thing appealed to me, I picked up a sample of blades, currently using Nacets while I play about with the plates of the razor. I picked up the Proraso brush which is made by Omega and seems to go a good job albeit first I’ve used. As I was concerned about sensitive skin I went with the Proraso white (pre, soap and balm). I’ve had some nicks while trialling things but nothing major but that’s due to my learning which angle to use etc, I’m enjoying taking my time with it and have so far enjoyed shaving with my new kit.

Been using the Rockwell 6S, with mostly shark super chrome blades, daily for about 2 years now. 2 pass with touch ups and it’s a dfs/bbs. I’ll admit you have to be careful around the back and take it a little slower. I use plate 4 for a fresh blade and move to a 5 after a couple shaves on same blade. You could also look up u/thedeaconshaves and check out his videos on YouTube as he uses this little head shaving razor/tool thingy (yes that is the technical term lol) which seems to be quick and efficient.

Razors are a great option, especially the one you recommended but, I’m going to respectfully disagree about the electric ones leaving stubble. I’ve had great success with my Andis pro foil shaver. Got it on Amazon a couple years ago.

I have an Andi foil I love, about 1/2 price of the Braun. Though I only use it for travel or when I’m dry camping. Otherwise I’m using a safety razor. I get 2 extra days between shaves and never have burn or bumps

Daily I use either an Overlander or a Bison. I didn't like the Leaf. Felt flimsy and unrefined. I don't mind the Proof razor. Ultimately I like the Overlander and Bison and is there is a third, I'd pick Henson mild. I usually use Minora or Silver Blue or Bic Chrome blades.

My husband has been shaving his head with a series of Philips Norelco shavers for decades now. They have a model specifically aimed at shaving your head (Head Shaver Pro). He used to use disposable razors, but once he switched, he’s never looked back.

I still can't decide if I like the Henson. I guess the answer is in the fact I got rid of it. Great shave but just too different from my favorite DE shaves. I agree with your assumption that a cartridge convert that doesn't want a hobby should be happy with the mild. And, I don't know why they make the medium, as it just makes the mild slightly worse. It's a well-built great shaver and basically brainless. Nice pics, btw. Thanks for the review.

I found the Henson very pressure-tolerant - I could be pretty careless and quick and heavy handed with it and still have a comfortable shave. Definitely not the case with some of my more aggressive razors that require a light touch and careful angle control. To your second point, the Merkur adjustable is reputed to be Very aggressive even on its mildest settings, so I’m not surprised that it gives you more trouble than the Henson.

I’m fascinated by how the Henson differs from other safer razors in such a way that shaving with another right after the Henson (with Henson muscle memory) makes one cut themselves. Can you describe the difference in technique needed between a Henson and other razors? For reference, I use a mild Henson and occasionally cut myself, especially near the bottom of my neck. I also have a Merkur Adjustable (MK-700002) which I cannot use without cutting the absolute dog *shit* out of the entirety of my face, even on the least aggressive setting. I have no idea what I’m doing differently between the two.

Watch this guy's how-to-shave videos. He's very down to earth. It's all good advice no matter what kind of razor you use, even if it's just a disposable. It doesn't take long to get the basics down and then you won't feel intimidated any more - it'll just be The Way You Shave. :) Anyway... It's possible to cut yourself with either one of the razors you're considering. You can cut yourself with Any razor. They're razors, after all... They cut stuff. But as with most razors, the cuts are teeny and insubstantial... they're called "safety razors" for a reason. There's hardly any blade exposure, just like modern cartridge razors. Just keep some tissue paper handy and maybe a styptic pencil if you're worried about nicking yourself with any unintended movements - it'll help stop the bleeding quickly if you really mess up. Henson Mild feels more like a '70s cartridge razor to me. (Skip the medium.) Merkur feels more like a safety razor. Both are equally gentle and forgiving to use in my opinion. Both can provide a perfectly close and comfortable shave; that said, I the Merkur is a little fussier about finding the perfect shaving angle, which is necessary if you want a baby-butt-smooth face... I can use the Henson on auto-pilot and still get great results. But really either one should suit your needs. If you decide to pursue the Merkur, you can consider their 33c / 42c / 24c / 23c / 38c too; they all have the same head geometry as the 34c, just with different handles. Some of them are cheaper than the 34, especially if you order from England. As for the rest of your setup: Proraso pre-shave works well with Italian-style shave soaps (Proraso, Cella, Vitos, and oodles of other coconut-based shave soaps) because it mixes with the soap to improve the quality of lather. I don't think it does quite the same thing with Cremo. It definitely isn't necessary with most tubes or tubs of shave *cream* or most artisanal shave soaps - they already contain the ingredients that make the pre-shave useful with traditional Italian-style shave soaps. Your shave creams / soaps all work okay. Modern shave soaps work better, if you want to upgrade to something that can make smoother / gloopier lather and be gentler on your skin. The post-shaves you listed are all fine. No need for a razor stand or a shaving bowl; stands are for display, bowls are over-rated. You'll notice no shave bowl in the how-to-shave vids linked above. Do you have a shave brush? I don't see one listed above. If you don't already have one, you should pick up a soft brush of some sort - synthetic bristle (Not Tuxedo style) would be the best value. Yaqi (based in China), AP Shave Co (Canada), or Maggard (USA) would be your best place to pick one out. Once you've got some practice, the quality of lather from a brush and soap will almost always be better than

Been shaving with DE razors as well as big brand multi blade razors for almost 40 years. Along the way I took a deep dive into the DE razor rabbit hole. you name it, I've tried it. My last purchase was the Henson medium razor. It tied with my previous favourite razor (1960's Adjustable Gillette Slim (at setting 9)) as far as closeness is concerned, but it was a much more comfortable shave. Now I only shave with the Henson. That said, what works for one guy, may not for the next. For context, I shave about every third day, would describe certain areas of my face as extremely sensitive and I my facial hair is not coarse/thick. Also, I don't use any cream or gel, just hot water. I like an extremely smooth result so there's a lot of skin stretching and multiple passes involved (when I have the time). Whether I only have time for a quick shave or a more methodical one, the Henson is hands down the best. A couple things to be mindful of. The Henson's shaving angle is fairly unique, not better or worse than others, just different. Second, the aluminum version is very light. Maybe one of the biggest complaints from guys who like heavy razors. Personally I love the lighter weight. Lastly, some people under estimate the impact that the brand of blade used has on the shave. Before giving up on a razor, I would experiment with a few different blades. Of course this goes for all razors, not just the Henson.
